From the recording Summer In Rhode Island
I actually wrote this song as a very young adult literally working in a hospital dish room, dreaming of "being a star"! It's been a long time, and I'm not really seeking stardom, just trying to raise money for a good cause. I do live by the adage "It's never too late"!
Lyrics
Dishroom Blues
(Words and Music by Charlie Nault)
Well I needed a job was down to my last buck
No gas left in this beat up truck
I spotted a sign that said we need someone
And the next thing I know I’ve got this dirty apron on
And I’m singin the Dishroom Blues
Water soakin through my shoes
You know it’s hot in here but it’s cold out there
And I guess they call this payin your dues
Well I’ve been standin in the dishroom
All damned day workin for a peasant’s pay
Garbage on my hands sweat pours down my face
This job’s got me feelin like a total disgrace
That’s why I’m singin the Dishroom Blues
Water soakin through my shoes
You know it’s hot in here but it’s cold out there
And I’ve got to keep on payin my dues
Well I swear one day I’m gonna break away
I’m gonna make CMA’s Top Ten
But ‘till I find the right song
Get’s them singin along
These plates are piling up again… And I’m just
Singin the Dishroom Blues
Water soakin through my shoes
You know it’s hot in here but it’s cold out there
And I guess that I’m just payin my dues
I said it’s hot in here, but it’s cold out there and I
Pray that I’m just payin my dues….
