Amy Grace is not a real little girl from my past. The idea for the song was however, born from the feelings of the painful, very sudden loss of a cousin when I was just 9 years old. The feelings lay dormant (as many buried emotions from our childhoods do...) until an older brother posted a tribute on Facebook and those feelings came flooding in as I read the post and saw the pictures...and the song Amy Grace just started to flow out of that. I could barely sing it as I was writing it, but it was quite therapeutic. Perhaps the song will unleash some long stuffed emotions for you. If so, and it helps, I am humbled and grateful.

Lyrics

Amy Grace
(Words and Music by Charlie Nault)

There’s an old brick driveway on the edge of town
But they tore the house it belonged to down
And I often fondly recall that place
Was the home of my Amy Grace

Amy Grace was the prettiest girl in town
And she fell in love with this boyish clown
And she swore one day she would marry me
Oh how silly Amy Grace could be

We rode the same yellow bus to school
And to talk to girls they said was not cool
But she walked right up and she kissed my cheek
And all my friends were so jealous of me

‘Cause Amy Grace was the prettiest girl in town
She became best friends with this boyish clown
And she kissed my cheek every chance she could
Oh how bold Amy Grace could be

All the shades were drawn still they let me in
But this boyish clown could not comprehend
I just held her hand while her Momma cried
And just before sweet Amy Grace died

Amy sat bolt up and said Jesus is near
He will wipe away all your tears
Then she laid back down with the sweetest smile
And Amy Grace took her place in Heaven

Amy Grace was the prettiest girl in town
She still holds the heart of this boyish clown
She said “I’ll go first and save you a place”
Oh how brave Amy Grace could be

There’s an old brick driveway on the edge of town
But they tore the house it belonged to down
And I often fondly recall that place
Was the home of my Amy Grace… Was the home of Sweet Amy Grace
